{"id":2455,"date":"2020-05-14T06:48:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-14T06:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forexvarsity.com\/welcome\/?p=2455"},"modified":"2020-05-14T06:48:01","modified_gmt":"2020-05-14T06:48:01","slug":"dollar-up-as-powell-rejects-negative-rates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forexvarsity.com\/welcome\/dollar-up-as-powell-rejects-negative-rates\/","title":{"rendered":"Dollar Up as Powell Rejects Negative Rates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dollar was&nbsp;up&nbsp;on Thursday morning in Asia&nbsp;after&nbsp;U.S. Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell rejected the possibility of negative rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a highly anticipated speech on Wednesday, Powell joined a list of policymakers&nbsp;to fend off the notion, even after Fed futures began pricing a chance of&nbsp;negative&nbsp;U.S. rates within the next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe committee\u2019s view on negative rates really has not changed. This is not something that we&nbsp;[the Federal Open Market Committee]&nbsp;are looking at,\u201d&nbsp;he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/us-dollar-index\">U.S. Dollar Index<\/a>&nbsp;that tracks the greenback against a basket of other currencies&nbsp;gained 0.03% to 100.317&nbsp;by 11:47&nbsp;AM ET (4:47&nbsp;AM&nbsp;GMT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe dollar managed to bounce back after Powell\u2019s comments on negative rates, but now the dollar\u2019s bias is fairly neutral.&nbsp;There could be some safe-have flows into the dollar, but everyone is facing the same economic problems caused by the coronavirus.\u201d&nbsp;Takuya Kanda, general manager of the research department at Gaitame.com Research Institute, told CNBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/usd-jpy\">USD\/JPY<\/a>&nbsp;pair was down 0.11% to 106.91.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/aud-usd\">AUD\/USD<\/a>&nbsp;pair lost 0.29% to 0.6435 after&nbsp;Australia\u2019s statistics bureau&nbsp;reported a record&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/employment-change-94\">employment slump<\/a>&nbsp;of 594,300 in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/nzd-usd\">NZD\/USD<\/a>&nbsp;pair&nbsp;lost 0.04&nbsp;% to&nbsp;0.5988. The Kiwi government will hand out its budget later in the day, which is expected to include fiscal stimuli to repair the COVID-19 economic damage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;Reserve Bank of New Zealand&nbsp;also&nbsp;flagged the possibility of negative interest rates&nbsp;a day earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/usd-cny\">USD\/CNY<\/a>&nbsp;pair gained 0.08% to 7.0969.&nbsp;Investors will be looking at&nbsp;China\u2019s&nbsp;first quarter&nbsp;industrial production,&nbsp;retail sales and investment&nbsp;data,&nbsp;to be released on Friday,&nbsp;to gauge the speed of its recovery even as the country battles a second wave of outbreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/gbp-usd\">GBP\/USD<\/a>&nbsp;pair&nbsp;was down&nbsp;0.18% to 1.2207.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The dollar was&nbsp;up&nbsp;on Thursday morning in Asia&nbsp;after&nbsp;U.S. Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell rejected the possibility of negative rates.
