{"id":1277,"date":"2019-03-06T05:56:44","date_gmt":"2019-03-06T05:56:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forexvarsity.com\/welcome\/?p=1277"},"modified":"2019-03-06T05:57:34","modified_gmt":"2019-03-06T05:57:34","slug":"dollar-gains-aussie-dips-on-disappointing-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forexvarsity.com\/welcome\/dollar-gains-aussie-dips-on-disappointing-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Dollar gains, Aussie dips on disappointing data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. dollar continued to strengthen in Asia on Wednesday morning while the Aussie dollar slipped on disappointing economic growth data.<\/p>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/quotes\/us-dollar-index\" id=\"5c7f608997300\" class=\"aqlink js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"aql\" data-pairid=\"8827\">U.S. Dollar Index<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>that tracks the greenback against a basket of six major currencies rose 0.07% to 96.863 by 10:15 PM ET (3:15 AM GMT). The dollar gained against other currencies Tuesday after data showed a rebound in U.S.<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/new-home-sales-222\" id=\"5c7f608997b2e\" class=\"js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"eel\" data-eventid=\"222\">housing<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>and services activity, which eased concerns over a slowdown in the world\u2019s biggest economy.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian dollar kept losing ground to the dollar. The<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/aud-usd\" id=\"5c7f60899764e\" class=\"aqlink js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"aql\" data-pairid=\"5\">AUD\/USD<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>pair was down 0.63% to 0.7037.<\/p>\n<p>The Reserve Bank of Australia\u2019s (RBA) March policy meeting was held on Tuesday with the country\u2019s economic growth data for the last quarter coming in at a disappointing 0.2%, below the expected 0.3%, providing more evidence of slowing domestic growth and sparked more conversations over a rate cut this year. The RBA meeting ended with rates at a record-low 1.50%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven that many forecasters were on 0.2% for fourth-quarter GDP, the price action on the Australian dollar is worrying,\u201d said Sean Callow, senior currency strategist at Westpac in Sydney, according to Reuters. \u201cIt seems markets are not impressed with the details of the report, such as 0.4% on household consumption, slight downward revisions and reliance on public spending to keep the economy moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Australian dollar also took a hit last month after the RBA stepped back from a long-standing tightening bias.<\/p>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/usd-cny\" id=\"5c7f608997753\" class=\"aqlink js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"aql\" data-pairid=\"2111\">USD\/CNY<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>pair inched up a modest 0.13% to 6.7153. The yuan was supported by optimism of a possible Sino-U.S. trade deal and was little affected by the country\u2019s annual policy summit commenced Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said at opening of the National People&#8217;s Congress (NPC) that the country has set the GDP growth target for 2019 between 6% and 6.5%, which is the lowest rate in 30 years, and cutting taxes and fee by nearly 2 trillion yuan ($300 billion) to support various industries.<\/p>\n<p>The People&#8217;s Bank of China (PBOC) set the yuan reference rate at 6.7053 versus yesterday\u2019s fix of 6.6998.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/usd-jpy\" id=\"5c7f60899784e\" class=\"aqlink js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"aql\" data-pairid=\"3\">USD\/JPY<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>pair was down 0.09% to 111.78 while the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/usd-nzd\" id=\"5c7f60899795f\" class=\"aqlink js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"aql\" data-pairid=\"2174\">USD\/NZD<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>pair was up 0.4% to 1.4781.<\/p>\n<p>The market is also closely watching Friday\u2019s U.S. non-farm payrolls release for February which will indicate wage growth and labour market strength.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. dollar continued to strengthen in Asia on Wednesday morning while the Aussie dollar slipped on disappointing economic growth data.
