{"id":1017,"date":"2018-10-15T05:53:40","date_gmt":"2018-10-15T05:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forexvarsity.com\/welcome\/?p=1017"},"modified":"2018-10-15T05:53:40","modified_gmt":"2018-10-15T05:53:40","slug":"sterling-falls-as-worries-on-brexit-climb-yen-strengthens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forexvarsity.com\/welcome\/sterling-falls-as-worries-on-brexit-climb-yen-strengthens\/","title":{"rendered":"Sterling falls as worries on Brexit climb, yen strengthens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The dollar firmed against the pound and euro on Monday as unsuccessful British efforts to secure a Brexit deal ahead of a key European Union summit reinforced global investors&#8217; preference for safe haven currencies.<\/p>\n<p>The euro (<span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/eur-usd\" id=\"5bc42b44baeff\" class=\"aqlink js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"aql\" data-pairid=\"1\">EUR=<\/a><\/span>) traded around 0.13 percent lower at 1.1546 on Monday, while the sterling<span>\u00a0<\/span>&lt;gbp=&gt;lost 0.36 percent to 1.3106 after hitting an October high of 1.3258 on Friday.&lt;\/gbp=&gt;<\/p>\n<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/quotes\/us-dollar-index\" id=\"5bc42b44bb026\" class=\"aqlink js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"aql\" data-pairid=\"8827\">dollar index<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>(<span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/indices\/usdollar\" id=\"5bc42b44bb0cf\" class=\"aqlink js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"aql\" data-pairid=\"942611\">DXY<\/a><\/span>), a gauge of its value against six major peers, was up 0.13 percent at 95.349.<\/p>\n<p>The problem of Britain&#8217;s land border with Ireland has thwarted a drive to clinch a Brexit deal, as negotiators over the weekend admitted defeat after marathon talks and pressed pause for the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>The pound is also under pressure after former foreign minister Boris Johnson&#8217;s comments in a newspaper column on Sunday that Britain must stand up to bullies in the European Union and press for a &#8220;super Canada&#8221; deal.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, a key figure of the campaign to leave the EU in 2016 and bookmakers&#8217; favorite to replace Prime Minister Theresa May, is the latest critic to redouble efforts to urge her to rethink her plan to leave the union.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The primary focus for sterling is Brexit and data is only a distraction,&#8221; Kathy Lien, New York-based managing director of foreign exchange strategy at BK Asset Management, said in a note.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The clock is ticking and a deal is drawing close but having been burned by false hopes, investors are ignoring the conflicting headlines and waiting for official confirmation,&#8221; she said<\/p>\n<p>The yen<span>\u00a0<\/span>&lt;jpy=&gt;strengthened to 112.07 versus the dollar on Monday. Against the dollar, the yen has strengthened in six out of the last seven trading sessions, as global risk-off sentiment kept active safe haven bids on the Japanese currency.&lt;\/jpy=&gt;<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Saturday that Washington wants to include a provision to deter currency manipulation in future trade deals, including with Japan, based on the currency chapter in the new deal to revamp the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).<\/p>\n<p>His remark drew concern in Japan, where domestic media ran front-page stories questioning whether this would give Washington the right to label as currency manipulation any future foreign exchange market interventions by Tokyo to keep sharp yen rises in check.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts expect the yen to strengthen in the short term as potential negative sentiment toward equities would catalyze safe-haven demand for the yen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our bias is that equities will remain under pressure this week, and thus see scope for<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/usd-jpy\" id=\"5bc42b44bb180\" class=\"aqlink js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"aql\" data-pairid=\"3\">USD\/JPY<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>to ease somewhat further toward the 110 level,&#8221; a research note from Mizuho Bank said.<\/p>\n<p>At 0408 GMT Monday, Japan&#8217;s Nikkei (<span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/indices\/japan-ni225\" id=\"5bc42b44bb22c\" class=\"aqlink js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"aql\" data-pairid=\"178\">N225<\/a><\/span>) was down 1.5 percent to 22,352.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian dollar<span>\u00a0<\/span>&lt;aud=&gt;changed hands at 0.7101 against the dollar, down 0.25 percent. The<span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/aud-usd\" id=\"5bc42b44bb33a\" class=\"aqlink js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"aql\" data-pairid=\"5\">Aussie<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>hit a two-year low of 0.7039 on Oct. 5.&lt;\/aud=&gt;<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian dollar<span>\u00a0<\/span>&lt;cad=&gt;traded flat versus the dollar on Monday, at 1.3025.&lt;\/cad=&gt;<\/p>\n<p>The Swiss franc<span>\u00a0<\/span>&lt;chf=&gt;, seen as a safe haven currency by traders, was little changed at 0.9908 versus the dollar.&lt;\/chf=&gt;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"aqPopupWrapper js-hover-me-wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/xau-usd\" id=\"5bc42b44bb3fa\" class=\"aqlink js-hover-me\" hoverme=\"aql\" data-pairid=\"68\">Spot gold<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>&lt;xau=&gt;built on last week&#8217;s gains, changing hands at $1,222 per ounce, gaining 0.38 percent.&lt;\/xau=&gt;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The dollar firmed against the pound and euro on Monday as unsuccessful British efforts to secure a Brexit deal ahead of a key European Union summit reinforced global investors&#8217; preference for safe haven currencies.
